Mark lay inside, pale and dressed in a suit. He looked exactly as he had for the viewing. But as they looked closer, they saw it… The sign everyone was praying for, but no one believed possible.
A slight twitch in his finger.
Then, the almost invisible movement of his chest as he took a shallow, uneven breath. “He’s breathing!” someone screamed. “Call an ambulance!”
The scene turned into chaos. The funeral was instantly aborted as emergency responders rushed in. Within minutes, paramedics confirmed a faint, extremely slow heartbeat.
Mark was rushed to the hospital with his family trailing in shock. Later that evening, the doctors explained what had happened. Mark had suffered from a rare condition known as catalepsy.
Catalepsy causes a person’s body to enter a state of complete muscle rigidity, drastically lowered body temperature, and a slowed metabolism. To medical equipment, and even to experienced doctors, the heart rate can become so faint that it registers as zero.
The patient looks, feels, and appears dead to the outside world, but they are often partially conscious and trapped within their own body, unable to move or speak. If it weren’t for Max, Mark would have been buried that afternoon.
The dog, with his superior senses, had detected the faint movement and heartbeat that human technology had failed to pick up. After a few days of intensive care, Mark woke up. He suffered no permanent damage from the ordeal.
When he was finally well enough, the hospital allowed Max to visit him. As soon as the dog walked into the room, he jumped onto the hospital bed and rested his head on Mark’s chest.
Mark is home today, living a normal life. He knows that his survival wasn’t a matter of luck or medical genius. It was the result of the unbreakable bond between a man and his dog—a bond that literally reached out from the grave to pull him back.
